#Doubles - a fusion of Ping Pong and Dance
August 9, 2017 to November 30, 1999
Pop-up event promises to be a ‘Ping! and Dance’ Spectacular
Visitors to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be stopped in their tracks this weekend by a pop-up dance and ping pong event which is a collaboration between Table Tennis England, Ping! London and Joe Garbett Dance Company.
‘Doubles’ is a unique fusion of ping pong and contemporary dance resulting in a series of spontaneous public performances that will create a startling spectacle and subtly involve people as it unfolds.
It’s all part of the vision to inspire Londoners to be more active in their everyday lives and to create a talking point that raises the profile of ping pong and dance and makes both more visible, accessible and relevant.
Andy James, Innovation Officer for Table Tennis England, explained why they were keen to get involved:
“We’re thrilled to be working with Joe Garbett to celebrate the diversity of ways Londoners can be active in public space. Table tennis and dance are traditionally seen as activities that take place in dedicated, often inaccessible, indoor spaces, so it’ll be exciting to see how people react to these spontaneous and very public performances”
Choreographer Joe Garbett said,
“I am so excited to share the work that myself and my dancers have prepared for the general public. This project has proved the success in unconventional collaborations and by working together we have found so much more in common. The coming together of dance and ping pong emphasises the importance in healthy lifestyles and positive public spaces. The performances are such a special and unique occasion for the everyday passer-by.”
You’ll be able to catch the performances at the Ping! tables at Timber Lodge Cafe 11:30 and 15:30 and Victory Park, East Village at 13:15 on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th August.
Londoners are encouraged to gather round the Ping! tables at these times and share their photos, videos and messages on social media using the hashtags #DOUBLES and #PING2017.
Ping! places table tennis tables in popular public spaces all over London and 23 other English towns and cities, providing free to use equipment and encouraging everyone to grab a bat and ball and get playing!
